1. Geographies and Governance of Energy Transitions in Africa

Focus: Exploration of regional and spatial dynamics in energy production, distribution, and use.

Possible Topics:

  • Regional disparities and cross-border cooperation
  • National vs. sub-national energy governance
  • Policy and regulatory frameworks
  • Role of state and non-state actors
  • Fossil fuels, forests, and the energy crisis

2. Stranded Assets, Green Growth, and Climate Resilience

Focus: Aligning Africa’s transition with global climate goals and advancing adaptation, while managing fossil-based assets and promoting green growth.

Possible Topics:

  • Risks and opportunities of stranded fossil fuel assets
  • Low-carbon development pathways
  • Strategies for managing strategic resources and minerals
  • Climate adaptation and environmental safeguards
  • Corporate social responsibility in energy transitions

3. Energy Access, Social Justice, and Community Participation

Focus: Ensuring energy transitions are inclusive and enhance access to reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy for all.

Possible Topics:

  • Gender and social equity in energy access
  • Community participation and citizen engagement
  • Rural-urban disparities and last-mile solutions
  • Protection of vulnerable/indigenous communities
  • Just transition policies for workers

4. Technological Innovation and Infrastructure for Africa

Focus: Celebrating homegrown innovations and assessing their potential for sustainable energy solutions tailored to African contexts.

Possible Topics:

  • Renewable energy technologies (solar, wind, hydro, etc.)
  • Off-grid and decentralised solutions
  • Grid modernisation and energy storage
  • Plug-and-play microgrids
  • Socio-technical perspectives and environmental ethics

5. Governance, Policy Pathways, and Financing the Transition

Focus: Understanding what effective policy, governance, and finance models are vital for successful transitions and how international priorities meet African needs.

Possible Topics:

  • Policy and regulatory frameworks
  • Mobilising domestic and international finance
  • Leveraging global partnerships for sustainable energy
  • Natural resource governance
  • Institutional capacity building

Conference Dates

Review Process

All abstracts will undergo a peer-review process by the conference scientific committee. Authors will be notified of acceptance by November 1st, 2025. Selected papers will be invited for full submission and potential publication in conference proceedings.
