Frank Mugagga
Frank Mugagga is currently a Professor of Environmental Geography at the Department of Geography, Geoinformatics and Climatic Sciences at Makerere University, Uganda, which he served as Head between 2019 and 2023. He holds a PhD in Environmental Geography from the Nelson Mandela University, South Africa; an MPhil Development Studies (Specializing in Geography) obtained from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway and a Bachelor of Environmental Management from Makerere University, Uganda. Frank’s research career and professional experience spans over two and a half decades working on a range of issues including smallholder farming systems, waste management, land use, natural resources management, rural development, climate change and disaster risk management in diverse landscapes and more recently on governance, livelihoods, sustainable energy transitions and inclusive urbanization systems in East African Cities. Frank has over the years conducted research, community outreach programmes and numerous Participatory Action Oriented trainings aimed at increasing the uptake and translation of science into actionable practices among smallholder farmers and other stakeholders, community awareness and action among smallholder natural resource dependent communities. Frank is currently serving as the country Lead for ‘Capacity Building for Socially Just and Sustainable Energy Transitions (SET Project); a joint Project between the Department of Geography, Geoinformatics and Climatic Sciences – Makerere University, NTNU - Norway, University of Juba - South Sudan and University of Nairobi - Kenya.
